Which Witch?
August 27, 2008

Ethan and I were at Sprouts (a local grocery store) today and a very elderly couple (they were at LEAST mid 80's) were getting nectarines next to us. They were friendly and commented that Ethan was nice, etc. We finished getting our fruit and started to walk away when Ethan blurts out - LOUDLY - "Mom, she looks like a witch!"
I immediately clasped my hand over his mouth to keep anything else from coming out and told him in as serious a voice I could muster (since I was cracking up under my breath) that we DO NOT call people witches.
I then explained that yes, I understand she has a lot of wrinkles (she really did), but that she is very old and when people get older, they get wrinkles. Ethan :"I have wrinkles!" showing me the palms of his hands - he thinks the creases there are wrinkles, I guess.
Lest any of you think I'm schooling my child on how to be a witch...his comment stems from us looking at newspaper ads at breakfast this morning. I let him look at the Michaels ad b/c they always have toys and interesting things in it for him to check out (I'm looking at the grocery stores, which he doesn't find quite as interesteing)...and they had a small picture of a bunch of halloween stuff-which included a witch. So, he started asking all kinds of questions and we had the "we don't talk about witches, ghosts, etc. in our house because they are not from God." I don't know exactly where that statement stands theologically, but it was good enough for my 4 year old.
We've have discussions about monsters and ghosts before and how God is bigger and stronger than any monsters and ghosts so we don't have any in our house because God lives here. Also, we've discussed how because God is in our house and we love Him, we only talk about and have things that are from God and filled with His love. I told him this morning that some people use the things in the picture to make people scared and that fear is not from God, so we will not use those things to scare people and we will not talk about them or have them around our house.
That seemed to satisfy him, mostly...but he was rather fascinated with the whole thing and sort of tried to start telling me that ghosts aren't scary and he doesn't mind being scared. I finally just changed the subject and said we were done with breakfast and got on with the day...pray for me, people!
